Liberty and Stile Floreale

Villa Moorings built in1924 represents a significant example of Liberty.

Liberty flourished in Europe about 1900 in decorative art and architecture.

In Italy it was named after Arthur Lasenby Liberty (1843-1917) a London merchant who sold ornaments, fabrics and miscellaneous art objects from the Far East.Linked to Liberty, in various European countries was Modernism, lâ€™Art Noveau in France and Belgium, Jugendstil in Germanic countries, Modern Style or Art Decor in England, Secession Stil. The object of all this was to aesthetically better the designs of common objects of mass-production .

Another denomination used in Italy is Stile Floreale , moulds bearing a stylised floral design or Dolce Stil Novo.

Both in its structure, as in the decorative arts of professor Bruno Cordati, its furnishings, Villa Moorings faithfully respects the style of the period. High ceilings and wide windows indicating the magnificence of man, decorative exterior particulars (decorative architraves above windows and terraces carried out in bas-relief, the balusters of terraces, porches and balconies) all to enrich the outline of the villa.

As some of the villas of this period, Villa Moorings is distinguished by its corner tower. Observation point which reflects the want to communicate with the scenery and at the same time, it is a symbolic expression of the power of the owner.

Inside and on the terrace the decor imitates the Tuscan Liberty style: styled flowers, fruit and bunches of grapes, vases, crowns of laurels, birds of paradise, pastel coloured geometric drawings. Villa Moorings distinguishes itself amongst other buildings of that period for one particular decor which represents an anthem to light; light bulbs were invented by Edison in1878 but started to be used during the years in which the Villa was built:, guests may be left in amazement at the sight of Villa Mooring’s ceilings, which geometric decor was achieved by using the stylisation of various types of light bulbs.

Each room is perimetered by a floral or geometric band with various designs: unfortunately in the forties, when this kind of decor was no longer appreciated, it was painted over: today’s owners have managed in part, to restore some of the designs.

Itâ€™s magnificent staircase, made of white marble from Carrara (each stair is made from one single block) is supported by a hand made wrought iron railing,often used during this period, designed with concentric circles in which centre stand out the initials of the commissioner of this imposing villa (Leonello Castelvecchi) the same initials, only in gold on crystals can be found on the doors of the centre hallway. Even the furnishings reflect the accuracy of the magnificence of this building: Venetian Murano chandeliers, and original period furniture create an atmosphere which give our guest the feeling of living in past-times.

Villa Moorings costruita nel 1924 rappresenta un significativo esempio dello stile Liberty.
Il Liberty fiorì in Europa intorno al 1900 nelle arti decorative e in architettura. In Italia è battezzato con il termine Liberty dal nome dell’inglese Arthur Lasenby Liberty (1858-1919), commerciante londinese di oggetti d’arte e di alta qualità destinati al largo consumo. Allo Stile Liberty nei diversi paesi europei si collegano il Modernismo, l’Art Nouveau in Francia ed in Belgio, il Jugendstil nei paesi germanici, il Modern Style o Art Decore in inghilterra, il Secession Stil. Obiettivo fu quello di migliorare esteticamente gli oggetti di uso comune prodotti dalle industrie per allontanare il rischio di banalizzazione della produzione in serie.
Altra denominazione usata in Italia è anche Stile floreale, perché la decorazione era costituita da forme stilizzate di fiori o Dolce Stil Nuovo.
Sia nella struttura, sia nei decori del professor Bruno Cordati che negli arredi Villa Moorings rispetta fedelmente lo stile dell’epoca.
Gli alti soffitti e le grosse finestre per indicare la magnificenza dell’uomo, i particolari esterni decorativi (gli architravi decorati sopra finestre e terrazze eseguiti in bassorilievo, i balaustri di terrazza, veranda e balconi) per arricchire il prospetto della villa.
Come alcune ville dell’epoca, anche Villa Moorings è caratterizzata dalla torretta d’angolo, punto di osservazione che riflette la volontà di colloquio con il paesaggio e, al tempo stesso, è espressione simbolica di potere del proprietario.
All’interno e sulle terrazze i decori ricalcano quelli tipici del liberty toscano: fiori stilizzati, frutta e grappoli d’uva, anfore, corone d’alloro, uccelli del paradiso, disegni geometrici dai tipici colori pastello. Villa Moorings si distingue dalle altre costruzioni dell’epoca per i suoi particolari decori che rappresentano un inno alla luce; la lampadina fu inventata da Edison nel 1878 ma la sua diffusione risale agli anni di costruzione della villa: così, sui soffitti di Villa Moorings l’ospite può meravigliarsi di fronte a decori geometrici realizzati con la stilizzazione di diverse tipologie di lampadine.
Ogni camera è decorata da un diverso motivo floreale o geometrico che la perimetra a fascia: purtroppo negli anni 40, quando ormai i decori non erano più considerati di pregio, questi vennero ricoperti dalla nuova tinta: gli attuali proprietari hanno provveduto a ripristinare e restaurare un saggio.
La sua pregiata scala di marmo bianco di Carrara (ogni scalino è composto da un unico blocco) è affiancata da una ringhiera fatta a mano in ferro battuto, usato spesso all’epoca, costituita da cerchi concentrici e decori tra cui risaltano le iniziali del committente di questa maestosa villa (Leonello Castelvecchi): le stesse iniziali si trovano in oro sui cristalli delle porte nel corridoio centrale.
Anche gli arredi rispecchiano fedelmente la maestosità della struttura: lampadari di murano e mobili originari dell’epoca avvolgono l’ospite di in un’atmosfera di altri tempi.
