The torrential rain which has been falling on this area over the last 24 hours is starting to have an effect on the Serchio river at the bottom of the valley with a dramatic increase in water flow surging down the valley to the sea.

By 8 pm this evening more than 150 mm of rain had fallen on Gallicano on the other side of the valley to Barga, 130 mm at Casone di Profecchia which is situated further up the valley towards the ski resorts and 123mm at Ponte di Campia the main bridge across the Serchio from Garfagnana and into the comune of Barga.

As you can quite plainly see in the video below recorded this afternoon on the bridge at Ponte di Campia, the water level is rising.

For the moment the rain seems to have stopped but according to our resident weather expert David Sesto (article here), later on this evening or early on Sunday morning more storms are expected with hail, high winds and snow falling on the high ground above 900- 1000 metres.

In short, there is a high probability that the winter will be putting in an early entrance in the next 24 hours.
