Yuliya Skurska exhibition based on Pascoli’s poetry  -

This exhibition offers a visual representation of Giovanni Pascoli’s “L’Ora di Barga.” Rather than illustrating the imagery that Pascoli employs to construct the poem, this grouping of images seeks to materialize the abstract themes, ideas and feelings that the work evokes, thereby placing the viewer directly into its core.

At the outset of this project I translated the poem into Russian and English, my native tongues, in order to better understand its true meaning. These translations separated the poem’s essence, one beyond words, from its language and prepared me to render it in a visual medium.

The seven pieces in this room correspond to the stanzas of the poem. They are the result of a semester’s research, sketches and analyses and are my initial visual exploration of the poem. In these works, I strived to recreate the emotional and symbolic impact contained in each stanza and it is through them that I was able to find the appropriate visual language for the portrayal of the poem.
